life gets better when you do

Issue No. 06

The Opener

There's a version of you from five years ago who would be proud of where you are right now.

You don't think about that one much. You're too busy comparing yourself to the version of you who'd be further along, who'd have it more figured out, who'd be doing better. That comparison runs all day, every day, and it's exhausting.

But the version of you from five years ago is also still in there. The one who hadn't done the hard things yet. The one who was scared of what you've now done a hundred times. The one who would have given anything to be where you are now.

You forgot to ask that one what they think.

A Real Moment

Most of the time, we measure ourselves against the future. Where we should be. What we should have done. Who we should have become. And we lose every time, because the future is always going to be a step ahead.

The past version of you isn't going anywhere though. They already lived through what they lived through. They already wanted what they wanted. And a lot of what you have now is exactly what they were hoping for.

You stopped noticing because you got it. That's how this works. The things we used to long for become the background of our actual lives, and we move the goalpost without thanking ourselves for getting there.

Something You Can Use

This week, give the past version of yourself a minute. Not in some big way. Just for a second.

Think about who you were five years ago. What you were worried about. What you were hoping would happen. What you weren't sure you'd get through. And then look at where you actually are now. Some of what they wanted, you have. Some of what they were scared of, you handled. Some of what they couldn't picture, you built.

The past version of you would look at your life right now and feel relief. Maybe even awe at a few things. You've just been too close to it for too long to see it that way. That's allowed to change.

A Moment for You

Close your eyes for a second.

Think of one thing you have now that the past version of you was hoping for. A relationship. A skill. A piece of stability. A piece of yourself you used to be afraid of.

Just notice it. That used to be a wish. Now it's just a fact. And facts are allowed to feel like something.

Something to Sit With

What's one thing about your life right now that the version of you from five years ago would have given a lot to have?

That's not nothing. That's something. And you got there.

You are not as far behind as you think. You are just measuring with the wrong end of the ruler. Flip it around. Look at the ground you've covered instead of the ground you haven't. The past version of you is back there somewhere, watching you live the life they were hoping for. Let that mean something.

Life gets better when you do. And the proof is already behind you, if you're willing to look.
